Gary Paulsen is a fantastic author. He uses many sensory words and makes me feel like I’m there. He doesn’t always use complete sentences, which I find entertaining. Three of my favorite scenes from Hatchet are the plane crash, the moose attack, and the first fire day. A boy named Brian was riding in a plane. The pilot had a heart attack, so Brian had to fly the plane by himself. Brian tried using the radio to call for help, but no one answered him. After a while, he crashed in a small lake and got stranded in a forest. Brian was just sitting down, minding his own business, when a moose charged at him. The moose pushed Brian under water and started fighting. Brian escaped and tried to fool the moose by pretending to be dead. The moose bought it and ate some grass. As soon as Brian moved, the moose attacked him again. Once he broke out, he played dead again. He took small, and almost unnoticeable, movements until he got back to his camp. …show more content…
He tries using his hatchet to start a fire, but it only makes sparks. Brian gets so desperate that he even rips up a twenty dollar bill, but that doesn’t help. He remembers a past science class about fire and knows that he has to have sparks and oxygen to start a fire. After multiple tries, Brian finally started a fire. I really liked the book, Hatchet. I enjoyed many scenes, but these three have to be my favorites. It was not only an interesting book, but I also learned a lot from it. For example, in paragraph four, I learned how to make a fire.
