Survival and the obstacles people overcome may be taken for granted. Simple struggles can result in life changing events. Troubles people come across can be difficult to pass. In the novel, Hatchet written by Gary Paulsen, Brian faces both internal and external conflict.

To start off, Brian has challenging external conflicts with the animals of the Canadian outdoors. A porcupine defends itself against Brian but damages him as well. The hatchet flies towards the animal as it slithers around. Needles and pain are felt when the porcupine slaps his quills on Brian’s leg and left spreading pain. A skunk found Brian’s turtle eggs and took them. Brian finally spots the critter and angers it by throwing sand at it. Up goes the tail and Brian is sprayed

A tornado occurs after he hears a roar of wind. Sparks and coals jump around and the clashes of wind whip and hammer him and his shelter. At the end of the tornado, Brian has ripping pain and felt he was back to square one. But he was not back to square one, for he had the knowledge of what to do. When the pilot is killed by a heart attack, it causes collisions for Brian. Spasms of pain hit as the pilot screams about the soreness of his chest. Death comes upon the pilot and Brian was left alone in a plane. Clueless and alone, Brian is left to survive the wilderness.

In the end,thoughts pass through Brian’s mind and torment him. Suicidal thoughts come to mind when a rescue plane turns away. Brian just wants to die, he is done, he uses his hatchet to cut himself. Blood comes rushing as he wishes for death, but he just ends up disappointed. Torturing Brian, the secret he knows about his parents cut into him like a knife. He blamed his mom and hates it, he finds it painful. His mom has an affair with a man and Brian does not know if anyone knows that he knows. Anger rushes through him as he constantly thinks about it.

Brian struggles to survive as the plot of Hatchet progresses. Animals strike against him repetitively. Nature tests and attacks him in many ways. Fearful and clueless, Brian lets torturing thoughts go through his mind and nag him. If people work hard to go beyond their conflicts, the results can change for the
