Hate Depicted In Scrooge's A Christmas Carol

In the first stave of A Christmas Carol, a selected theme is hate. Text that supports this claim is that on pg. 5, Scrooge says, “What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older? Also, on pg. 8, Scrooge heartlessly states, “Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned-they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there. I feel this supports the idea of hate because Scrooge is a person who looks out dully at the world. Therefore, as you can see, he hates Christmas. On pg. 8, they were asking him if he could donate money for the poor and as you read, his response was wretched. A passage that abides this theme is on pg. 35. The Christmas Ghost of the Past has taken Scrooge to a scene with his former true love, Belle. This is what Belle told him, “Another idol has displaced me; and if it can cheer and comfort you in time to come, as I would have tried to do, I have know just cause to grieve.” Belle released Scrooge since he was being self-centered in his money and wealth.
