Haunt is found all throughout "A Christmas Carol". Haunt means, "to manifest itself at (a place) regularly" (). Haunting occurs in Scrooge's past, present, and future. Haunt can be like the ghosts haunting the Murder House of American Horror story, but in this case its more so the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future (IMBD). Haunting can not be of the physical form therefore it must be intangible. However, the intangible has an effect on Scrooge's life. Scrooge's memories, regrets, and mistakes haunt him into becoming a better person. Haunt in the past is the memories that Scrooge has been pushing down for so long. When Scrooge sees Belle break up with is younger self, the feeling of regret haunts old Scrooge because his life could have been so much different. He could have had a wife and a family, but he threw it all away for money. This memory of Belle is like the reminder of a bad date. He realizes this when the Ghost Of Christmas Present shows him Fred and his dinner party mocking Scrooge. "I am sorry for him, I couldn't be angry with him if I tried" (Dickens 360). Scrooge understands that he isn't hurting Fred by not attending Christmas dinner, but he is hurting himself by ruining that relationship. Fred is not haunted by the fact that Scrooge does not want to talk to him, nonetheless he tries to reach out but Scrooge just shuts him out. Scrooge also is haunted by how he treated Mr. Cratchit. "Let me hear another sound from you, and you'll keep your Christmas by losing your situation" (Dickens 309). He is haunted by how he treated Bob before he knew what his family was like.
