The Independence of Eddie Rose: Healing Through Characters. No family is perfect. Even families who on the surface seem bright and untroubled, may actually be gloomy and dull. Personally, I have experienced some of this to the extreme. I may not have known it in the time being, however when I look back, I am amazed by some of the things I have gone through. I have noticed that not only people on the outside are oblivious to what can go on behind closed doors, but those inside as well. William S. Yellow Robe, Jr. displays this in his play The Independence of Eddie Rose. He uses this idea to incorporate the theme of healing into his Native American work, and to allow his audience a stronger connection. The most emphasized is either Eddie’s or Theia’s. Eddie comes to realization that his family has many problems, sees through his denial, and helps save his sister. Theia is relieved of the sexual abuse put on her by Lenny, and both her and Eddie are put into a much better situation. The true healing in this play comes from the fact that each character becomes less oblivious and opens their eyes to problematic situations, including Eddie’s mother. At first she does nothing to help her children, then realizes what she had been putting them through and signs custody papers putting both Eddie and Theia into their aunt’s care. Their aunt Thelma at first denies that Eddie and Theia are in an unsafe situation, but once she realized that they were, she took matters into her own hand. I think her being able to help them gave her a sense of empowerment and helped heal some of her wounds. At first she wasn’t sure how she could help, and thought she might not have been able to at all. Once she realized that she could end all suffering, she felt relieved and
