In the 1980 a Nurse by the name of Janet Mentgen began using the energy associated with touch to aid in her healing practice. Janet had been a Registered Nurse for 43 years and discovered that by using touch with her sick patients, she was noticing her patients healing faster and spending less time in the hospital. Janet began using her ‘healing touch’ in her private practice. Seeing such a positive outcome, Janet, in 1989 founded The Healing Touch Practitioner Program. Using the power of energy along with modern medicine and aid in healing. (Healing Touch 2002) Healing Touch is a Complementary Medicine modality. When illness, stress, injury, grief, medical treatments and their side effects, deplete the bodies natural immunity, Healing Touch can replace some of that negative energy with positive energy balance. With soothing music, it can be done fully clothed, and is similar in some ways to massage, though can be done without touching an individual. The practitioner uses his or her energy, and with his/her hands to move from the head of the patient down the body to extract this congested energy and allow for body relaxation. There are 6 levels of classes, ranging from two to four day retreat style events. These 6 classes range from $350-$900 for the retreat. In addition to these 6 classes, there are nine levels of advance continuing education classes that can be added to a Healing Touch Practitioner. These classes have also been recognized and endorsed by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, The American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork. The Healing Touch Program has been peer-reviewed, and is endorsed by American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA). Being endorsed means Nurses can acquire continuing education credit for taking these classes. (Wardell
