African Americas experience multiple health disparities and their disparities vary by situations caused by social determinants. Social determinants have the ability to impact a variety of health behaviors and health outcomes. The CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, defines social determinants as “conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes.” African Americans can be often over looked but African Americans have the highest rate of death by many chronic diseases. There are many factors that affect the health and health behaviors of African Americans. However, Health inequalities result from the lack and differences in income, power, and the control of a person’s life. Health inequalities are affecting African Americans drastically. Michael Marmot, the author of social determinants of health, stated in literature that, “one of the major contributors to health inequalities is the lack of power those who are disadvantaged have over their own lives. Providing these individuals the skills for political activism gives them more control and can in itself reduce disparities.” For African Americans, the result of past and current discrimination throughout the United States led to health inequalities. Physical factors relate to individuals feelings, thoughts, and other cognitive characteristics that can affect behaviors, attitudes, and overall function of the human mind. Social factors relate to living conditions, living conditions such as poverty, unemployment, and crime. Genes and biology refers to age and sex. Health services and medical care related to the access and the quality of health care. The theories that are aforementioned seek to explain differences in health statuses of racial/ethnic groups.
