I currently work in the mental health field and have done so for the past 7 years. I chose to write about my own personal experience because I feel that the mental health field suffers more often from burnout and job dissatisfaction. I have also spent the past two years working part time in the local hospital here and have found that healthcare workers suffer from many of the same feelings. Working in a service field can cause many mental health problems with the employees themselves. In the healthcare or mental health field the risk for burnout is significantly increased. Job satisfaction is the attitude that we hold about our position as an employee. Holding a high level of job satisfaction would show positive feelings about your job, while dissatisfied persons hold negative feelings.

I have spoken at length many times with my co-workers about our issues with the job. We typically have an extensive workload, at the hospital we work 12+ hours each shift, many work night shifts, and the issues with absenteeism and not having the staff to accommodate the patients. When working at the hospital I felt that my workload would have been more effectively completed by two people. When someone places their life in your hands and you are responsible for making sure that there aren’t any abnormalities in their heart rhythms while multi-tasking and doing many other tasks it can become very overwhelming. When you combine many different employees with the same feelings of being overworked, understaffed, and unappreciated it can be a very volatile environment.
