Allusion: “He came to them with thunder and lighting.” (Page 56). “Some of the pilgrims behind the stretcher carried his arms -- two shot guns, a heavy rifle, and a light revolver-carbine -- the thunderbolts of that pitiful Jupiter.” (Page 59). In Roman mythology Jupiter is the god of the sky and thunder, as well as is the King of all gods. Thunderbolts were Jupiter’s weapon of choice, and as king the way that he kept antagonizing forces in line. In the first quote, thunder and lightening is referring to the guns and ammunition that Kurtz brings with him into the heart of Africa. While Jupiter wields a lightning bolt, Kurtz wields guns that to the Natives of Africa mark him as godly as they’ve never seen guns before and don’t understand how they work. Similarly, humans often create gods as a way to explain natural phenomenon, so the concept of Jupiter and his holiness is created by Europeans who lack a fundamental understanding of how the natural world works. The first is that she’s explicitly asking for the truth, she is not looking to make herself feel better, she feels as though she knew Kurtz best in the world and is upset because she believes she should have been with him in death and have been the one to hear those words. She prided herself on being the one to understand him, it’s unfair to deny her of truly knowing who he became when it’s clear how important this is to her. Secondly, It is clear she will be sad no matter what and will grieve the loss of her beloved for years to come. And Lastly, there is no possible way for Marlow to know exactly how she will react to the truth or how she will handle
