5. Hedgehog Concept It is the halfway point of my BHAG and I realized that I have reached my original goal of 5lbs. already. It is at this point that I knew I could reach my BHAG but what drove me to reach my goal? Collins describes the hedgehog concept using three interlocking circles which represent what are you passionate about, what drives your economic engine, and what you can be the best in the world at (Collins, 2001). By finding the tree circles, you are able to understand the simple underlying themes of what will help you become great. What can I be the best in the world at? For me this is disciple. Discipline in the form of ensuring that I did not cheat on my meals every day and that I would go to the gym every time that I said I would. I figured out that I am very passionate about the gym without question. A habit that Covey describes is being proactive which is “, being responsible for your own life,” and how “, our basic nature is to act, and not be acted upon” (Covey, 1989). How I have applied this into my life is that I realized that if I wanted to become more fit and look better, it will be up to me in the end for I am responsible for the choices that I make that will push me to reaching these goals. Because of this, I think that I have become a highly proactive person that Covey describes as I “do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for [my] behavior” (Covey, 1989). I could have chosen to blame things such as fast-food or injuries obtained for me being overweight but I realized that it is what it is and nothing can change what has already happened and the only way to spark change is if I chose to
