How could a deaf and blind child ever live a normal life? On June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia Alabama, Helen Adams Keller was born. She was struck with a rare illness that left her deaf and blind. She was 19 months old when she had the illness. The illness may have rubella, scarlet fever, or meningitis, but no one knows for sure. Helen could not communicate well, and she became very frustrated. By the time she was 7, her parents knew she needed professional help.
