This is a book report for Mr. Wooderson’s History 222 class. The report is on Helmet for My Pillow, written by Robert Leckie. The book consists of 320 pages and is published by Bantam Books Trade Paperback. The book was published in 2010. I chose this book for my report because it was one that had very good reviews that was on the class’s required reading list. The main character in this book is the author, Robert Leckie. Leckie is important in this book because it is solemnly about his life during World War II. Leckie was enlisted in the Marine Corps and had first-hand experience with viewing the war as an individual. He is the main character because the book is about his experiences and complications with being a Marine during World War II. The other characters in this book is simply not named by their true names but by nicknames the author chose that best described them. Hoosier, Runner, and Chuckler are notable friends the author meets when he is shipped to New River for more Marine training. Also there is Lt. Ivy League, who is the one that will have rivalry with Leckie. There are many other characters in the book that were part of the Marine Corps with Leckie. …show more content…
The book was set in the United States for certain parts, Australia, and different islands due to “island hopping”. The book was suspicious for the reader and yet scary for the writer due to the war and the many obstacles the author had to go through during the war. The main character was trying a give the reader a sense of how life was, from first-person point of view, during World War II. Leckie started the Marine Corps by enlisting and getting training in Parris Island. He was then sent to New River, where he got training in his field as a gunner’s assistant. Then his unit is shipped out into the
