Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin, an infamous artist from the post-impressionist era is most commonly recognized for his paintings in the Pacific island of Tahiti. The majority of Gauguin’s works can be viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Metropolitan Museum of art suggests that Gauguin was the founder of the movement of Symbolist art, and the pioneer for Fauvism and Expressionism. Although some may interpret Gauguin’s work to be problematic in the context of racial and gender issues, he was the artist that initiated the push needed to break into the new era of modern art.

Interpretations of Gauguin’s work evaluate the controversy in his fetishization of Tahitian women. Theodore Rousseau implies in Theodore Rousseau: Selections from His Writings that “These people appear before us with a childlike innocence and yet like children they remain indifferent to what we think.” Criticism towards Gauguin’s treatment of the Tahitians centers towards his continuous objectification of these people. The childlike innocence that Rousseau touches on is problematic in the way that it classifies these Tahitian people as inferior to a more sophisticated race. The Art Institute of Chicago reveals that Gauguin betrothed “one of his” 13-year-old Tahitian girls, this wording implies that the Tahitian girl is one of many that is owned by this artist.
