She began her life in Roanoke, Virginia but later moved to a small town named Clover when her mother died during childbirth. The ten children were separated, and Henrietta was sent to live with her grandfather Tommy. It was there she met her future husband, and biological first cousin, Day. Together they had five children, and struggled through poverty, before moving to Baltimore where she would die at the young age of 31; nine months after her cervical cancer diagnosis.
