Welcome to Henry Knox night. Thank you for tuning in on this beautiful October day. This year would mark the 208 anniversary of Henry Knox’s death . Henry Knox was born on July 25, 1750 in Boston of Massachusetts colony. He was one of 10 children. He was a clerk in a Boston bookstore and after his father William Knox died, he became the sole support of his mother Mary Knox. His interest as a child revolved around history, but one thing the loved to learn about more than anything was artillery. He eventually opened a bookstore of his own in Boston.
His military career began in the year of 1772 when he became a member of the Boston Grenadier. The volunteered at the Battle of Bunker Hill in June of 1775. Knox met general George Washington in 1775 when Washington arrived in Boston. Washington at the time found that American forces would need artillery, and the found Knox to be very knowledgeable on the subject, and asked his opinion of the matter. Knox recommended that they use the cannons from recently captured Fort Ticonderoga. Knox was then commissioned a colonel, placed in charge of artillery, and given the task of bringing the cannons from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. The used ox sleds to bring fifty cannons to Boston. As a reward for Knox helping in the crossing of the Delaware river, the was promoted to Brigadier-general. During the winter after crossing the Delaware, the helped develop a battalion that was ready to fight, and the also created a valuable arsenal. Henry Knox led the Battle at Monmouth. Knox also served on the court-martial of British spy John Andre. Knox’s artillery and guns played an important role at Yorktown.
