In this specific scene; Walter is enquiring about starting a business such as a liquor store or something as such. Walter is big on this whole liquor thing, but he is not a businessman, not yet at least he is still working on starting. To learn more about this whole liquor store business Walter goes to a local liquor store to learn more. When Walter enters the liquor store it is obvious that he must come here often. This is because he is very confident as he speaks to the employees and even the owner by their names. The way Walter talks and other clues suggests that Walter actually knows the people from seeing them every time he buys liquor. However, in this scene, Walter receives a lot of discouragement surrounding his ideas for business. The man Walter meets is a man named Herman who is the white owner of the liquor store. A major theme is this book is dreams, Walter dreams to take care of his family and be successful. Without this business, Walter feels like he cannot take care of his family. This business is his last chance according to him or even his last hope. Hope is another big theme in this play Walter’s hope relies heavily on money or this business idea. However, the other characters hopes rely on less materialistic things such as freedom or opportunity. Money, of course, is a huge theme, Walter believes money runs the world, He is obsessed with money. Walter’s dream is to make money and all his hope relies on his getting this money. This, of course, is not a very good thing, As we see in the play he deals with a lot of emotional problems and such. This scene is very important because it shows in more detail about Walter’s attitude and mindset.
