Heroes today are courageous, noble, daring, and are great leaders. Ulysses holds all these virtues, along with being clever. Heroes in ancient Greece are greatly looked up upon for their bravery, cleverness, and their will for sacrificing themselves for the greater good of their men and their society. However, not all heroes are perfect. Heroes in ancient Greece show hubris, which penalizes them because the gods do not condone vanity. In addition, to the qualities of bravery, courage, nobility, and leadership, in Bernard Evlin’s take on The Odyssey, The Adventures of Ulysses, Ulysses indicates that cleverness and wisdom can be more important than other characteristics. But he does not need to be clever while on the island, he needs to summon his brains on his journey away from the Sun Cattle island. All of Ulysses’ crew tragically dies at sea and he must use his intelligence to keep himself safe. (Page 103) Ulysses is getting pulled in by Charybdis’ vortex. In order to save himself he quickly thinks of a solution of staying on his raft until the whirlpool tried and pulled him in at the last second. Before Ulysses gets pulled in he briskly grasps onto a plant and hangs down. Ulysses then figures out the right moment he should drop down and lands on lumber. He notices that he is hungry and makes a makeshift spear to hunt fish. (Page 105) His hunting attempt is in vain and he pretends to be dead when the seagulls come to attack. Ulysses impacts the modern world by showing people that being clever is a greater strength than being physically strong. Again and again, the story of Ulysses is timeless because it is a unique, intricate story which pulls you in more every time you turn the page. His legacy continues to live on because he teaches people not to give up and reach your goal. As Philip Zimbardo, the psychiatrist and professor once said, “I’m saying to be a hero means you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes always are making a sacrifice. Heroes always take a risk. Heroes always deviant. Heroes always doing something that most people don’t and we want to change…” The Greeks know that their heroes were far from perfect, and they accept that. They know that their heroes are brave, courageous, and noble, but they also know that their heroes are only human and have flaws such as, wrath, vanity, and madness. Most of the greatest Greek heroes hold these qualities. The story of Ulysses will touch people’s hearts for eternities to come because it demonstrates the real meaning of an exceptional
