The parts of the Heroic Cycle plot you MUST have in your story's plot are: Call to Adventure, supernatural aid (at some point, not necessarily right by the Call), the Threshold (the transition from the hero's known world to the unknown), Challenges/Temptations (how many is up to you, but keep in mind the more you have the less strong they may be since this is a short story), the Abyss (which should have some sort of water element to it and result in some sort of revelation), the Transformation (which is also generally as a result of events during the Abyss), Atonement (your hero can atone for something he/she did in the past or become "at one" with his/her situation), Gift, Return (doesn't have to be literally to the place he/she started).

Challenges: Many mini challenges throughout training that slowly take a toll.
Challenge 1: Jeff doesn't perform will on his first test.
Challenge 2: Jeff was nearly too short to be an astronaut.
Challenge 3: Fellow classmate, Brad, is jealous of Jeff’s knowledge and mocks him daily.
Abyss: Jeff is actually close to dropping out of training when he is training for spacewalks in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory a training pool, a pool which simulates the weightless environment of space. However, he is hydrophobic and refuses to go in. This is a very low point because people are mocking him and if he doesn’t do this, there is no way he will ever be an astronaut.

Transformation: He takes his fear and overcomes it (using deep breathing and concentration) and continues training. The main transformation isn’t just overcoming his fear, but is his attitude changing into a “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” attitude.

Atonement: He is motivated, studying hard, practicing hard, confident, and managing time. He also becomes more open and asks questions. Finally he passes training and is ready to be an
