Heroism: Poem Analysis

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” (Reeve, online). A hero is an ordinary person that is strong and can get through difficult obstacles. Heroism is about having courage and being able to have strength through tough times even though they are not recognized very often.
A function of heroism is someone who helps another person without wanting to be recognized. In the poem “A man” a soldier lost his arm fighting for our country. He starts complaining about all the things he won’t be able to do normally but, then he finds a way to get past it all (Cassian pg.56). I think it is a good example because it can motivate people with lost limbs and especially soldiers not to give up. In the story by Gale Fiege he writes about a soldier who lost his limb in war. According to Fieges story, a man named Tristian Eugene lost his leg. After going through a severe time, he decided he would encourage other veterans it will not be the end of the world if they are wounded (Eugene pg.58). Both of the people stated were brave by going through their own problems and helping other people.

According to Springboard it states Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass both struggled for freedom for others. In the poem “O Captain my Captain”, it states Lincoln died trying to make slaves free. The people were sad of his death yet happy at the same time because he had begun a big change in the world (Lincoln pg.69). In the poem Fredrick Douglass, it states that Douglass fought with his fellow slaves. He knew what the cost of this would be and he paid the price. In the process of this he was beaten badly (Douglass pg.70). Both Lincoln and Fredrick were fearless
