Heros In The Outsiders

In the story, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the main group is called the Greasers. These Greaser are misinterpreted as criminals and childish, but some are good and heros. One of the Greasers who many of the characteristics of a hero. He is Darry, Ponyboy’s brother and guardian. Darry was sacrificial, skilled, and one of the most important, destined for something. Over the course of the story, Darry has sacrificed or risk many things he loved and cared for. It shows when Ponyboy talked about Darry, ” But we just didn‘t have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won. And now he didn’t have time between jobs to even think about college. So he never went anywhere and never did anything anymore,”(p16). These jobs were for getting enough money to take care of Ponyboy and feeding all of them, including Sodapop, the other brother. In The Outsiders, when Johnny talks about Ponyboy’s family, he said,”’And Darry is the spittin‘ image of your father, but he ain‘t wild and laughing all the time like he was, ‘“ (p78). Darry looks a lot like Ponyboy’s dad which foreshadows that Darry would be like Ponyboy’s father after the father died from a car crash. He was also very serious about education compared to the rest of the gang, so he could only take of Ponyboy properly. It is also talked about when Ponyboy talks about Darry’s seriousness, “...a lot of people thought Darry and Dad were brother and son. But they only looked alike- my father was never rough with anyone without meaning to be,”(p6). It talked about how Darry was rough which was important as Ponyboy does not know common sense, so he needs to know through discipline. He was the only one that was tough on Ponyboy.
