The seventeen stages of the Hero’s Journey written by Joseph Campbell can be applied to any piece of literature, movie etc. Albert Camus, Jon Krakauer and George Orwell write about the rise or downfall of their characters in each one of their literary pieces, The Stranger , Into the Wild, and Nineteen Eighty-four. These novel’s protagonist all experience emotions that normal people can to relate on a daily basis which will eventually lead them on an adventure. These emotions can vary from not getting along with parents to going behind a society’s back by breaking the law. In any scenario,there arethe seventeen stages of a hero’s journey present according to Joseph Campbell.

This happens after they have refused or delayed their call to adventure. For Winston he is not guided by one person alone, but rather the way the society he lives in as a whole. The beginning of Winston and Julia's relationship depends on them meeting in victory square. This is what allows Winston and Julia privacy. Through the novel Into the Wild, we see that McCandless’ mentor is mainly Jack Landon. We know this because Chris quotes him many times in the novel. That is crossing the first threshold. In the three literary pieces , the characters are all pushed into the first threshold yet experience it differently. Winston’s journey into the forest and his meeting with Julia indicates his step into the unknown world of his journey. This is when he will enter a completely new world and have to go by any new rules that have been set. “ He still had not the courage to approach her” We’re all right here ? He repeated stupidly...There's nothing big enough to hide a Mike in besides I have been here before” ( Orwell Part 2 Chapter 2). This is when he first encounters danger that he cannot escape . McCandless soon after leaving from his hometown, meets people along his way, such as Wayne Westerburg, Ronald Frands, Jan Burres, and Jim Gallien. They all help him in his journey to Alaska. Whether it be a shelter, a place to eat or a place to get a job so that he can earn some money. The first incident that occurred was when he drowned in Mexico with his canoe. He was then afraid of water. The second incident that happened was when he had to cross the sushana River to get to the bus. Meursault crosses the first threshold when he has to ask his boss for a couple of days off in order to go to his mom’s funeral.
