When analyzing these two versions of Beowulf there are many similarities, but also some captivating scenes that differ and alter the comprehension of Beowulf’s true qualities. The book portrays this brave man as a classic epic hero with outstanding courage and determination to obtain eternal glory. While the movie does identify his braveness and willpower to save Herot, in this film Beowulf becomes more realistic, showing signs of weakness when he surrenders to sinful actions, thus making him a tragic hero. In the book Beowulf is shown as a man with unlimited amounts of courage and strength. He is given characteristics of a true epic hero including superhuman capabilities and the title of an unmatched warrior. Beowulf battles throughout his life for the only thing valuable to him and his people: eternal honor and remembrance of his heroic duties. He has no desire for wealth and would rather die poor with recognition than rich with no name, “Let whoever can win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark” (1387-1389). Having these qualities gave Beowulf the aspiration to sacrifice himself in order to save his people and protect Herot from the horrific Grendel while maintaining strength to do what’s right and resist corrupt impulses.
