Everyone gets awarded at some point in their life, but that doesn’t mean they’ll stop all the adventures in their life. This idea, that living life to the fullest is explored in Dorothy Canfield Fisher’s, “The Heyday of the Blood”. The grandson is embarrassed that the grandfather tries to be young again. One prominent symbol in the story is the merry-go-round, a ride for a fair/carnival that goes around and around, and up-and-down to represent the ups and downs in life in the story. Another important part is that the author uses allusion to also talk about life. Through these two prominent key points, Dorothy demonstrates her theme, live life to the fullest. Dorothy uses king Solomon as a type of allusion in the story. In the story, it said “King Solomon couldn’t tell when we’d ever get a chance again” (122). That’s basically saying don’t take your life for granted.
Also in the stoty gran’ther said, “Gran’ther’s six dollars and forty-three cents lasted like the widows cursed oil.” (123). That means everything doesn’t last as long as you want it so, should live your life as happy as you can because you never know what’s going to happen. Through living life to your fullest the grandson learned to look at life in a different way. In ‘The Heyday of the Blood’ The merry-go-round showed the ups and downs in life and the risk you must take to get what you want. And uses king Solomon as allusion to say don’t take your life for granted and you don’t know when anything could happen. Through these statements, Fisher outlines for the reader to live life to the fullest. Perhaps people can take this and change the way they see
