I am writing to you to discuss your essay “Hidden Intellectualism” and its relevancy in today’s society. Your essay offers a new perspective on education and the way we perceive intellectualism that has been, to some extent, inadvertently embraced by society. In Hidden Intellectualism, it I implied that a large number of students have difficulty discussing and working with traditionally intellectual topics. Although this continues to be the case, in the last decade, a relatively new factor was introduced into the equation, and that factor was technology. Technology such as computers, tablets, and even cellular phones, have infiltrated the educational system in an unimaginable way.
This technology isn’t always necessarily used for “street smart” topics, but it does offer a new way to work with traditionally intellectual topics that we haven’t seen before. It has been believed that traditionally intellectual people are not considered “cool” or “popular” by their peers, but there are signs that point to a shifting perspective. With the introduction of social media, teens are eager to express their ideas and their opinions on every subject out there. With the need to validate opinions, young people are often encouraged to support their ideas with evidence, creating a virtual environment of debate and reasoning that nurtures intellectualism.
