When people think if the government, they think of things like lawfulness, order, and protection. Most people would support the government by paying their taxes and obeying the law. But have you ever started to wonder what the world would be like without a government. You would probably think of it as chaos and destruction because there would be no hierarchies to protect us from disorder. You might change your mind after reading this.

Most people live their day to day lives without being harmed by other people, and think that without a government there would not be people to protect us from murder, theft, and other harmful crimes. This might be true for psychopaths who want to harm other people, but most people do not want to kill or harm

Some may want free market capitalism, while others want collectivist means of production. The vast amount of economic ideologies that are compatible with anarchism goes on. In anarchism you don’t belong to a government so you don’t have to conform to their economic system. Left market anarchism includes ideologies such as Communism, Collectivism, and Syndicalism. You may be wondering how communism can be in anarchism, but if you read the origins of communism from people like Karl Marx who wrote The Communist Manifesto, you will hear that true communism is a stateless classless society in which the means of production are split collectively among the people. Most anarcho-communists believe that there should be no currency and markets, hence saying that the means of production should be split and not traded. If you like free markets but still want to have a means of production whether it be collectively or individually, this is called Mutualism. The first self-proclaimed anarchist philosopher of the 1800’s, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon had come up with the idea of mutualism. He did not intend for the original mutualism to have markets but that evolved from later philosophers. To explain mutualism, we will have to start off with the idea of a central bank called “The Mutual Credit Bank”. The Mutual Credit Bank is an idea that means if there was no government, there would be a central bank that distributes an equal amount of currency among the people. When the people have currency they are free to trade or buy from people in the free market. People can either work individually or in a “Co-Op”, which is a voluntary work group where there are no bosses like in capitalism. In co-ops, the workers split the means of production when people buy from them. You can sell your products or services to people and get money in return.
