High school is great for you. You’re the captain of the football team, your girlfriend is cheer captain. You have a 4.0 cumulative GPA. You have two AP classes and are dual enrolled at the local community college. It’s your senior year. It’s the homecoming game. It’s the fourth quarter, the game is tied. Thirty seconds on the clock. You’re on the 30 yard line. You know this single play will make or break the game. You look up, see the college scouts, your parents, and your girlfriend. They are all watching, holding their breaths. You decide to run the ball. As you cross the goal line, a 250 lb., 6 foot tall beast blind sides you and you fall bouncing your head off the frozen ground. With all the adrenaline pumping, you jump right back up. To an outside person, this does not seem logical, but to a high school student, it makes sense that they would be hurt more often. As a high school student, you are looking for options on which school to attend, and how will you receive scholarships and pay for school. For many students, the way they will pay for school is through a sports scholarship. To be noticed by a scout, they must exert themselves and push themselves more than anyone else on the field. Once on the college team, they just have to be better than the worst person on the team to stay on and to maintain their scholarship.
High school football is the cause of over ½ a million injuries a year. These students receive more blows to the head, than college players, and their helmets are underdeveloped. This sport needs special attention to revise the techniques used during games and practices, as well as, to review and change many of the rules and regulations. It is important that our students and future leaders of our world are protected as they make their way into their place in
