Education has played an important role in my life by giving me the opportunity to learn and acquire new skills that can be applied to social situations. During my junior and senior year of high school when I was getting prepared to complete college applications, the academic advisors and staff at my school did not focus on the true meaning of education and the importance of applying to college. Most of the academic counselors would often tell students that as long as they graduated with a high school diploma this would give each student the opportunity to have a good paying job. As a high school student, I witnessed the lack of support from high school counselors and not enough resources that guided students to college success. Experiencing all these factors lead me to focus on the concept of education and want to focus on becoming an academic advisor as my future career goal in order to support future high school students in my community. …show more content…
Today more students decide to continue pursuing a higher education after completing high school. Higher education opens the gates of success to those who complete a college degree. Those who pursue a higher education believe that pursuing an education can provide them with more opportunities for growth and career success. Furthermore, cultural issues have presented themselves providing students with challenging experiences. First generation students are the largest group of students that continue to pursue higher education after completing a high school diploma. For parents and families whose son and daughter are the first in their family to attend college can become a challenging experience as they have to adapt to their child being away from home for the first time. Other groups of families expect their children to stay at home leading students to attend the closest community college and pursue an education
