High School Students Should Start Later Essay

Research says that only 15% of high school students get the recommended 9 hours of sleep per night. This is a problem. Students who do not get enough sleep every night experience a lack of concentration in school the next day and do not perform as well as they would if they had gotten an extra hour of sleep. I propose that Lower Merion should push back the high school starting time by an hour in order for the students to be more alert during class and in turn have a better performance in school.

Sleep deprivation can cause a myriad of problems with a person’s health and in their school life. Getting too little sleep can cause a person to have depression, memory problems, have impaired brain activity, have cognitive dysfunction, moodiness, and many other things. All of the side effects just listed can affect a student’s performance in their academic classes in a negative way. Statistics say that 87% of US high school students get far less than the recommended 10 hours of sleep each night, and this makes it far more difficult for students to pay attention in class in the following morning. This has been done and proven to be successful in a bunch of schools throughout the country. Doing this will address the problem that we are facing because It will give the students the extra time they need in order to get a healthy amount of sleep and give the amount of attention to their academics that they deserve.

In conclusion, I believe that the high school students in our community should have an extra hour of sleep each night and that the high school start time should be pushed back and I hope you agree with me and believe that
