A large amount of communities believe that Hip Hop has a positive influence on society. They believe that Hip Hop is ‘voice for black culture’. Hip Hop is classified as a genre that features rap with an electric background. Many people believe that Hip Hop influences the mind and the spirit to open up to new ideas. While others believe that Hip Hop degrades society. Hip Hop impairs society by degrading women, referring to violence, drugs, and sex in the music, and because of the language in the music.
Hip Hop corrupts society. The genre, Hip Hop, corrupts society by degrading women. Hip Hop weakens society when it refers to violence, drugs, and sex. In the article “Does Hip Hop Degrade or Enhance Society?” Anson C. Asaka states that “It celebrates violence and criminality. The gun is a phallic symbol in mainstream rap. Many rap artists brag about having guns….In addition to promoting violence, mainstream rap glorifies crack dealing and materialism. Rappers brag about buying Maybachs, Bentleys and expensive jewelry with dope money.” The article continues by stating that “Many rap artists brag about shooting and killing their own black brothers. Instead of celebrating real achievements, mainstream rap celebrates getting shot and ‘catching cases’. Those disasters are badges of honor in the warped world of hip hop.” Later in the commentary he states that “Essentially, in order to be respected in the rap game, you must have street cred.
