Hippocrates was a very well known Greek physician, and is often referred to as the “Father of Medicine.” He was born in the year 460 B.C. on the island of Kos, Greece (Smith). Hippocrates was born into a wealthy family. Almost all of the men who came before him were physicians. This family claimed their ancestry from Asclepius, the Greek God of Medicine (Yapijakis 1). Hippocrates died around the year 377 B.C. in Larissa, Greece (Smith). During the time period that Hippocrates lived in, it was very unlikely for people to attend school unless your family was very wealthy, and he had that luxury. Throughout his years at school he studied reading, spelling, writing, music, poetry, and physical education. After his first nine years of schooling, he attended a secondary school for two more years, which was even more uncommon. It was very likely that he also studied the field of medicine under his father and another Greek physician, Herodicos. He likely learned how to treat his patients from these two (Hippocrates). Plato was not only a philosopher, but also mathematician. Plato was largely respected at the time because he was a student of Socrates. This is such an honor because Socrates is credited to being one of the founders of Western philosophy. Plato was also known for writing philosophical dialogues. Another achievement of his was that he opened the first higher institute in the Western World (Plato). Aristotle was a scientist along with his role as a philosopher. He was interested in the areas of science like marine biology, the different kinds of earth sciences, as well as biology. Aristotle’s contribution to biology was that he figured out a way to classify animals. His idea to do this was to put them into groups based on their simple characteristics.
