The United States decided to the put an end to the defeated Japanese army once and for all through the use of nuclear weapons. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6-9, 1945 killed and wounded a combined 225,000 Japanese citizens. These two atomic bombs were capable of completely wiping out anything within a 1.6 kilometer radius. Boeing bomber planes dropped these bombs in the center of both of the cities to maximize the damage caused on the cities. This caused for the destruction of government buildings, schools, businesses, as well as the massive loss of innocent civilian lives.
