Although parent involvement has associated with, improve student academics and positive social development, when it comes to minority students there are significant barriers that hinder parent level of engagement (Bower &Griffin, 2011). Obstacles for minority parents can be extensive dependent on the families ethnic background and cultural beliefs in comparison to nonminority students attending schools in the middle -income school community (Wang, Hill& Often, 2014; Mendez 2010, Toldson &Lemmons). Barriers and or challenge facing these minority families hindering parents’ ability to be involved in their children education include language, parents work obligation, time, negative encounters with teachers and administrators, lack of understanding of school curricula, transportation and other psychological costs (Altschol 2011, Mendez 2010, Orozco, 2008). Because of the diversity within the minority population being served in a high -poverty low- income community certain barriers are prevalent in other ethnic groups such as that of the Hispanic and African American populations. Hispanic also have one of the highest poverty rates amongst other minority groups. Hispanic student often performs lower on their academics and statewide testing than other student bodies (Ruiz 2009, Kao &Turney 2009). In the Hispanic community parent involvement is critical within the school community.However, the school's failure to communicate with parent using their home language coupled with he parents inability to communicate with the school and administrators and teachers; parents fears based on their immigrant status to question authorities.The lack of understanding of the public school system and their rights as parents are all barriers hindering parents from becoming involved in their children’s new learning
