Hispanic Stereotypes
I am a Hispanic, and that automatically means that I must have lived a difficult life. I am Hispanic so that means I am an illegal immigrant from Mexico. I am Mexican so that must mean I have friends in drug dealing gangs. I am Hispanic so when there is an increase in poverty, crime, or drugs, I am something to do with it. When applying for a scholarship, the essay topic should be, “Write about the challenges in your life and how you overcame them,” because you know I am Hispanic and therefore my life has to be so complicated. As a person of Hispanic heritage, all of the above stereotypes and more are those that I have to deal with. There are so many stereotypes being made about Hispanics right now. There is one though, that I cannot stand! Illegal immigrants. When you hear “illegal immigrant,” you immediately think of Mexicans. Mexicans are not the only illegal immigrants in the United States. There are Chinese, Asians, and Europeans immigrants everywhere in the United States. One other stereotype that I try to defeat every day is, “The Lazy Mexican.” Most of society believes that Mexicans immigrate to America just to live here and have a better life. What they do not realize is that they come for a better life, another chance at life to be prosperous. Mexicans are considered the most hardworking group in America. I work hard every day in school to maintain my grades up and be better than the day before. I will not let that term of “The Lazy Mexican,” ever affect me now and in my …show more content…
My childhood was filled with great memories because my parents wanted the best for me. They wanted more for me than to be the stereotypical Mexican, that got very little out of life. I am a hardworking student that keeps her grades at an average of As and Bs. I am the Historian for our FFA Chapter and I am very involved in our chapter. I am also a member of the band, as I play the clarinet. I have done everything the good way, the right way, the “normal way,” so why is it that our ethnic group still gets harassed and targeted for being unsuccessful, for being disgusting, and for being different. Having these statements said about us makes me value the morals that my parents have taught me throughout life. “Nothing worth having comes easy” and “Nothing is given to you in this life, so you have to work hard.” I will forever carry these with me to help benefit me through my life. If I have overcame anything in life brought on by my culture, it would be the stereotypes that are waiting for me to fail. Why is it that when we take standardized tests in schools, we have to fill in a bubble about our ethnicity? Why do they take our names and categorize them by ethnicity? Maybe it is because of the stereotypes that live within us. Everyone expects us Hispanics to be the least educated, and many only live up to that standard. That standard is not good enough for me.
