Dana and Rufus come from two different oppositions, whereas Rufus is content with his status, and Dana is waiting for the history to repeat itself. Aside from Rufus not wanting his authority to be challenged by the future, he seems to come to an acceptance with the fact that Dana says slavery will come to an end. However, Rufus is not fond of what blacks are expressing in the history book, as he argues towards their complaints after being freed “Then why the hell are they complaining about it?” (140).
