The Greatest Invention of the 19th century By: Jacob Conley Period: 5 5/24/2012

For my paper I decided to write about the invention of the toilet. I see the toilet as a huge American innovation for its time. The inventor of the toilet depending who opinion you choose, it is either Thomas Crapper or Alexander Cummings, but Alexander Cummings is the first to patient and sell toilets. Both men shared the same wants which was to not smell human feces and bolth hated the idea of no pluming in doors. So between 1775 and the early 1800’s is when the toilet came into play. Up until 1840 poorer homes didn’t have indoor plumbing, it was only found in the richer houses and hotels at the time. The first hotel to have indoor exclusive pluming was the Tremont hotel in Boston. With the invention of the toilet, provided an American named Joseph Gayetty to come up with the idea of toilet paper. In my own opinion this was and still is one the most important needs of the boule movement experience. Toilet paper had started to be used by people in 1887. Even back then it was still the same concept but just thinner and not the same material as we use today. It wasn’t until around 1910 when the toilet started to evolve and look like more modern day toilets.
