Abstract
This paper is about the history of police in America. This paper will describe the impact of Sir Robert Peel on American policing. Also, it will discuss the different stages of police in America. In addition, it will analyze the relationship between the government and the policing organizations throughout the United States.

Around 1900, the police started concentrating more on crime than care for the poor. The police were providing housing to the homeless beforehand.
During the polital stage, the police had an immense problem with corruption. The police were taking payoffs for not enforcing certain laws. Money was usually divided between officers, and officers also paid bribes for promotion(Schmalleger, 2009). The Professional Era saw a great change with the twentieth century. There were changes in the forces to improve the professionalism of police and new technology. The era saw changes such as the telephone and the patrol car(Schmalleger, 2009). The professional era also had to go through American policing underwent a vivid change in the twentieth century. The two principal forces for change were an organized movement for police professionalism, and the introduction of modern technology. The reforms of professionalism took many years, but it improved police because they implemented more of a military style of doing things(Schmalleger, 2009). The telephone improved communication within the officers. This was a huge innovation because citizens could easily just call the police if something happened.
Also, police cars were introduced. This allowed a fast response to citizens needing assistance.
Along with the patrol car, the two-way radio was introduced also. This allowed more supervision within the police department. During
