Holden encounters Phoebe’s journal on D.B’s desk when he broke into his parents house without anybody knowing. Phoebe’s journal is significant to Holden because it’s the least phoniest thing he’s come across throughout the whole book. For example, when Holden opens up the journal instead of seeing the typical “Dear diary,” he sees a bunch of random and thoughtless words (160).

After being unable to drink at the Lavender Room due to the waiters refusal to give Holden alcohol, Holden leaves and drinks alcohol at Wicker Bar. Alcohol is significant to Holden because he uses alcohol as a justification to why people view him as older as he is and why he even views himself as being more mature (142).

Holden found the gold ring in the carousel at Central Park. The gold ring is significant to Holden because for the first in the novel he is happy. He realizes while looking at the gold ring that growing up maybe in fact necessary for Phoebe and himself because they can’t protect themselves so it’s better to embrace it (211).

Holden kept Allie’s baseball mitt even after Allie died of Leukemia. Allie’s baseball mitt is symbolic to Holden because it’s a reminder of how unique Allie was and the love he had for him. The baseball mitt has poems all over it which Allie wrote (38).

Holden bought the red hunting hat in a sports store in New York. The red hunting hat is very special to holden because it’s a representation of how although Holden likes it in private, he doesn’t wear it in public because he thinks he may look phony.Whenever he’s feeling depressed he puts on his hunting hat in order to feel tough or confident (17).

At the beginning of the novel, Holden is enrolled at Pencey Prep even though he hates the school. Pencey Prep is significant to Holden because, to Holden, it’s the perfect example of a phony and misleading institute that is run by the cruel and mature world
