Which character is the most memorable? Why? (Catcher in the Rye)

One of the most memorable character’s from the three novels Looking for Alaska, Catcher in the Rye and Perks of being a wallflower was Holden Caulfield. Holden Caulfield is one of the most interesting characters due to his personality and unwillingness to grow up. J.D Salinger cleverly portrays Holden personality using his behavior to often judge others, his attitude towards sex and sexuality and finally his unwillingness to grow. All of these attributes help convey Holden Cuffed as an extremely interesting and peculiar character to look at.

One of the most noticeable of Holden’s behavior is that how he is extremely judgmental of other people. He criticizes people who are different and those who are typical and does so with almost everybody he knows. For example Holden knows no limits

Throughout the text, we see Holden often isolating himself from adulthood and further shows his hatred towards “phony” people. He is afraid that he will get into college, get a job and have kids and he is outraged at even the thought of change. One of the best examples that indicates this is when Holden visited the museum. When Holden visited the museum, he enjoyed every bit of as he felt as if everything was basic and simple. While visiting again with his little sister he was at first extremely surprised and happy that the museum had not changed one bit except he people in it. However, he was devastated to find the words “Fuck You” engraved on wall in his sister’s school. He expressed his wish to beat up whoever wrote that until he “was all bloody”. This goes to show that Holden would do whatever it takes to protect his own innocence as well as others around him. He thinks this was the start of man kind becoming phony and he especially does not want the other children to suffer that
