After the death of, Holden’s younger brother, Allie, Holden feels alienated. Slid, while vacationing in Maine, came down with leukemia and died very suddenly. Holden, who was very close struggled to cope with the death of Allie. Holden became depressed after the death, not only because he lost his younger brother, but because of how quickly it happened. After this Holden always has to say goodbye, whenever he leaves a place. Sfter leaving Pency, his boarding school, he talks about how he doesn't care whether a goodbye is good or bad, as long as he gets one ”I hate not being able to say goodbye. Holden can't let go of the past and is scared of the future. Holden doesn't want to move on from the past and this is symbolized by the museum, as nothing there ever changes. Another symbol of Holddn not wanting to grow up is his obsession woth the Central Park ducks. Holddn asks repeatedly where the ducks go, whichn Sosa he doesn't know where he should go or whst direction he should take his life in. Holden tries to rekindle his friendship with Jane, but can't bring himself to it“I thought about giving ole Jane a buzz, but I wpjust wasn't in the mood.” Holden fears growing up and tries to put it off. Holden is hypocritical, as he drinks and smokes, but becomes upset as his younger sister Phoebe begins to grow up.Holden misunderstands the poem of The Catcher in the Rye, which sows he hasn't grown up. Holden plans to Idolste himself by pretending to be a deaf mute, however this is anunrealistic
