Holes “Sometimes you need bad things to happen to inspire you to change and grow” (author unknown) This quote shows exactly what happened to Stanley, for he was sent to a juvenile correction facility which changed him greatly both internally and externally. In holes Stanley changes by the influence of Zero from being timid, insecure, and unloyal to bold, secure, and loyal. In the beginning of the novel Stanley is timid, unloyal, and insecure. In the novel Stanley’s personality in the beginning of the novel is very timid, but through the influence of Zero it was changed. “I’m not stupid,’ Zero said, “I know everybody thinks I am, I just don’t like answering their questions.” (Sachar page 99) This statement shows no doubt that Zero is influencing Stanley. By saying he doesn’t like answering questions it gives Stanley some anger to the other boys who insult him therefore giving him confidence. Even further, when Stanley went to the Warden’s office. Zero did one thing that none of the other boys did, he “had been quietly digging in his hole since Stanley’s return. Zero’s hole was much smaller than all the others” (Sachar page 94) This statement distinctly shows that Zero’s actions by digging Stanley’s hole is impacting Stanley to be more loyal to Zero and teach him to read and write. Also, Zero’s great influence causes Stanley to change from being insecure to not. This occurred after Stanley stated he was unlucky. “When you spend your whole life living in a hole,’ he said,’the only way you can go is up.” (Sachar page 160) When Zero stated this quote he meant that if you spend your entire life thinking negative things about yourself, the only way out of this zone is by thinking positive things about you.
