I got signed to be a goldwyn girl in hollywood, which opened a gate for me to work in a Hollywood fantasy factory. I earned 50 dollars a week, but keep in mind that 50 dollars in 1933 is now worth about 900 dollars in today’s money. I acted in 24 movies without getting my name in the credits, until I Co-starred in a movie called The Stage Door with other rising stars in hollywood. This movie gave me the break that I needed, and it allowed me to star in other B-list movies. When I started another movie, called Too Many Girls, I met a very good-looking cuban bandleader named Desi Arnaz. It was love at first sight, and after a rocky 6 months, we got married. Critics raved about the movie, but the public and Hollywood yawned. After the movie, MGM bought my contract, and immediately stared me in the hit move Du Barry Was a Lady. The movie required me to dye my hair a brassy red, something I would be known for later on. Though many people realized that I was funny, funny women did not sell tickets like beautiful ones do. This mindset made me join a comedy radio show put on by CBS, called My Favorite Husband. The show was a tremendous hit, and it was then critics realized that I could become something bigger than Hollywood had seen before. CBS cast me for a show they had an idea for, and I wanted Desi to be my on screen husband. CBS strongly put the idea down, because it was “not right” to have interracial marriage, ESPECIALLY on national television.
