Homeless Immigrant Reflection Paper

During this semester, I have had the opportunity to volunteer at Casa Marianella, an organization that provides food, shelter, and services to homeless immigrants. I have only been able to volunteer one session with the organization so I am most certain that my experiences will change the more I visit. In this paper, I will reflect on what my experiences have been like up to this date as well as how they have affected my views on the social problem of homeless immigrants. When I first arrived at the organization, the executive director, Jennifer Long, gave me a tour of the homes and introduced me to several of the other staff members and some of the occupants of the organization. I personally do not think that Casa Marianella should reach out to more populations because the organization is meant specifically for homeless immigrants. There are also other organizations in the city that target other groups such as the general homeless population who are not from other countries. In addition to not reaching out to different populations, I also do not believe that Casa Marianella should go out of their way to reach out for more individuals in their said population unless they expand their organization. During my visit, Jennifer explained to me how their three homes are able to fit a maximum capacity of a little over 35 people. Inconveniently, they have around 50 immigrants currently and are running out of space to house them, forcing them to cram too many people into one bedroom and even clearing out the living rooms to make more space. If the organization is able to expand their size, then I would most definitely believe that they should reach out to more individuals in their target population. From what I have experienced at Casa Marianella, I feel that I have been able to better connect with this ongoing social problem. The one session that I have been able to attend has already taught me so much about what it feels to be on the inside of the problem rather than being an outsider looking in. It has really helped
