Homelessness is an issue afflicting many different segments of society. Veterans are at a higher risk compared to the average population of becoming homeless due to the nature of experiences they endure while in the military. Preventing and ending veteran homelessness is a top priority for the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Efforts to end veteran homelessness needs to continue, since it is often the result of mental illness associated with service, substance abuse, and military occupational specialties not being transferable to the civilian workforce.
Mental illness is affecting veterans at an unprecedented rate in comparison to previous generations and wars. It is also the very reason why so many veterans are at risk of being homeless.
