Homer and Shakespeare are two of the most intelligent and creative writers in history. They detect the reader’s attention by capturing the imaginations about human nature and geography. Homer wrote The Odyssey, an epic poem which tells about Odysseus, a Greek man who had traveled on a journey and left his home for 20 years. Homer has a way of telling us about his adventures through all the hardships and up comings. His way of writing this faction is very similar to Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet. Shakespeare introduces us to Prince Hamlet who has just returned home to attend his father’s funeral and to find out his mother has remarried. Hamlet is a bitter, cynical character in the tragedy, Hamlet after finding out about his father’s death. Hamlet decides to have a play which was called the Mousetrap, to reveal how King Hamlet died so everyone can see what King Claudius did to his father. After King Claudius had viewed the play he says, “Give me some light. Away!”(Shakespeare 79). Once Prince Hamlet heard his uncle, he realized that King Claudius had killed his father using hebona. In Homer’s writing, he would use alcoholism and drug addiction in a way that was not known to readers back in 800 BC. People during this time period were not familiar with these terms because alcohol and drugs were not a part of their daily lives. Today we could relate alcoholism and drug addiction because these are two of the most up roaring issues of our time. Along with Homer, Shakespeare was ahead of his time because he looked into nature of power which lead to the poison of power. Shakespeare has his characters use poison as the toxin. In the tragedy, Hamlet, King Claudius poisons King Hamlet and ends up murdering him. But what he doesn’t know is that he will not be forgiven for his sin he has committed.
