Homeroom Observation: Mobile County Training School

This narrative is an observation of sixth graders at Mobile County Training School. I chose to observe the daily schedule of sixth graders for two hours. I observed my mother’s homeroom class that she teaches for three class periods throughout the day. I arrived a few minutes before the class was to enter.
The bell rings at 10:20am and the students are greeted at the door by their teacher, Mrs. Cleveland. Each student quietly enters the classroom and take a seat at their assigned table. It is a 6th grade math class at Mobile County Training School. The classroom is very colorful and rules and procedures are posted throughout the room. After the seven minutes are up the teacher pulls a popsicle stick out of a cup and calls a name. Antonio is the chosen student and he works the math problem and explains to his classmate. He worked the problem out correctly the teacher checks to see who missed the problem. After the bell ringer, the students get their math book out and the teacher starts the students off on a new section. The teacher modeled the problem and showed a video on finding the volume of rectangular prisms. Th e students then partnered together and completed a matching game about volume. Each activity sheet was turned in and the teacher assigned some individual practice on volume from their workbook. The teacher went over the section with the students they got started on a worksheet before lunch. The students went to restroom to prepare for lunch. At 11:20, the kids headed to the cafeteria. The cafeteria was filled with tables and the walls were painted blue with the mascot whippet. There was a television on the front wall that displayed daily trivia questions for each grade level. The kids had pizza, fries, fruit cups, and milk or juice. The students sat at the assigned table for
