The species Homo floresiensis was discovered in Liang Bua on the island of Flores, Indonesia (Figure 1) in 2003. Initially, the species were thought to have died out over 60 thousand years ago, however, revised dates published in 2016 now suggest that due to “archaeological evidence (mostly associated stone tools) suggests H. floresiensis lived at Liang Bua from at least 190,000 to 50,000 years ago” (Dorey, 2016). Because of this revision, the extinction of the species can no longer be attributed to the same volcanic eruption that caused the extinction of the Stegodon. Instead, it is now considered likely that our own species caused the extinction of the ‘hobbits’.
Homo floresiensis was given the nickname due to their resemblance to the characters, hobbits, created by the author of Lord of the Rings series J R R Tolkien.

The remains of at least nine individuals were found in the Liang Bua caves, including two partial skeletons of the 3-foot individuals - 1 adult, 1 child who was thought to be around 6 years old. The specimen which has been exposed to the most scrutiny by the scientific community is believed to be the skeleton of a 30-year-old female. LB1, as it is commonly known, is a partial skeleton that stands at around 3 feet tall (Figure
