In the novel the quote: "Honeybees depend not on physical contact with the colony, but also require its social companionship and support. The quote describes that a honeybee cannot survive, if it has no companions, and it needs the support from one another. This is because every bee does a different job, which means they are equally important, and if a group of bees is missing or doesn't do their job then the whole hive will suffer. To begin with August on page 148 says "Well, for instance, every bee has its role to play." This suggests that they are all dependent on one another. Finally, August talks about the queen bee and how it is a crucial part of the hive as it is the mother. On page 149 she says "She's the mother of every bee in the hive, and they all depend on her to keep it going. I don't care what their job is—...She's the mother of thousands." This indicates that all the bees realize that they need the queen bee for their hive to survive and they depend on her to keep it going. If a bee ever got isolated from the colony, it would die because it depends not just on the queen bee but on all of the other bees to help colony thrive. Each bee plays an important role in the colony and they are all crucial to the success. This could relate to the Boatwright sisters because each of them depend on each other in a different way to survive. August is like a mother figure and has a crucial job of keeping the household running and functioning properly. She and June have to make sure that May is okay and is not crying all the time. Adding on, Lily depends on the sisters because they provide with a home for her and basic needs that she needs to
