In the past couple of years, I have watched many of my peers walk across the stage to be inducted into the National Honor Society. They possessed all the characteristics needed to be accepted into this group. Looking at them as a freshman, and even a sophomore, I was quite frankly intimidated. I’ve never understood really much about it until recently. The National Honor Society recognizes students with good grades and who demonstrate leadership, promote school activities, show character, and comply with school regulations. With this new knowledge, I’m honored to be considered. I believe that this group does amazing things within the community.

I began at the YMCA, then went to traveling teams through the OYBA, and eventually played on the school’s team in seventh grade. While basketball has been a sport I’ve loved for many years, it has taught me so much more than how to dribble and shoot a ball. It has taught me the value of a teamwork, positivity, and leadership. It is impossible to win a game without the other girls on your team, and it’s impossible to go through school, and life, alone. Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of others that can help you more than hurt you, but without them it’s very hard to accomplish simple things. Positivity is also crucial because your attitude is contagious. Would you rather sit in your favorite class with others who are ready and excited to learn or with people who complain about everything and only want to go home? One person’s attitude can affect a large group of people which is why I think it’s so important to have a positive one. The final and perhaps the most important skill I learned was leadership. Every group needs at least one leader whether it’s to keep everyone on task or to keep everyone motivated.
The Silver Cord program is an amazing one and presents all of us with many opportunities. However, these are not always easy to access or achieve. During the last two years, all the times opportunities came I either couldn’t drive or was busy and unable to make it. This year, I haven’t been informed of these opportunities at all,
