Hope and chance play a huge role in Elizer's survival of the Holocaust. Hope has the biggest role of all allowing Elie to live through those tortuous months of his time in the camps, and being freed in Buchenwald. Hope and chance directly influence each other. Some examples are.... "Listen to me kid. Don't forget that you are in a concentration camp. In this place,it's every man for himself, and you cannot think of others. Not even your father. In this place, there is no such thing as father, brother, friend. Each of us die alone,"pg.110. This quote is very important to this story because this person is telling Elie that he can't do things because he is in a concentration camp. In Elie's mind he is thinking about his father while this man is saying this so he is kind of doubting the guy, but also believing him because nothing great has happened yet.…show more content… But I was out of tears. And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience. I might have found something like: Free at last!" pg.112. This is one of the most saddest quotes in this book because this is the part when his father died. In this part Elie doesn't really know how to react because he has been through so much pain and suffering since this has happened.
