In A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest Gaines uses hope to show that everyone has potential to be something in life. A man named Grant Wiggins feels trapped in the dead-end town of Bayonne. He feels he has no purpose except for teaching, that is until he meets Jefferson. Jefferson is a black man convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. He will be executed soon and Grant is told to teach him how to die a man. Grant doesn’t know how he will teach Jefferson these things when he isn’t sure of them himself. Grant finally gets through to Jefferson, and Jefferson walks into that execution room as the strongest man there. I still don’t even know if the sheriff will let me see him. And suppose he did; what then? What do I say to him? Do I know what a man is? Do I know how a man is supposed to die? I’m still trying to find out how a man should live. Am I supposed to tell someone how to die who has never lived (Gaines 31)? This quote explains that with Grant’s own troubles that, despite his education, he understands no more about the meaning in life than anyone else in the black race. The theme of A Lesson Before Dying is hope and determination. Grant is trying to find the motivation to help Jefferson find himself. In the process of helping Jefferson, Grant begins to discover himself and his aspirations in life. Grant is determined to help Jefferson see he is a human and worth something. Jefferson starts to believe him and that gives him motivation.Grant eventually overcomes his own insecurities to get through to Jefferson while helping himself. Grant is going through his own obstacles, but he gets through them by helping Jefferson, which benefits both people. Jefferson is going through his hard time because of racial stereotypes.
